Museums Galleries Scotland

Museums Galleries Scotland acts as the representative for the museums sector in Scotland, promoting its work to the public, stakeholders and the Scottish Government. Our core work involves supporting the sector both through funding (as the main channel for Scottish Government funding) and through advice and training covering all areas of our members’ work.

Organisations

ALMA-UK is a voluntary cross-nation partnership, dedicated to enhancing the public value of archives, libraries and museums UK wide. ALMA-UK is currently working on the Economic Impact study.

Arts & Business forges new partnerships between commerce and culture. They provide both services and training through their Board Development programme.

Audit Scotland provides the Auditor General and the Accounts Commission with the services they need to check that public money is spent properly, efficiently and effectively. It provides a range of guidance and information on increasing public sector efficiency and effectiveness.

Business Gateway provides advice and information on a range of issues for start-up and existing businesses.

The Charity Commission for England and Wales regulates the administration and affairs of registered charities in England and Wales. The equivalent body in Scotland is OSCR (see later).

CIPFA (Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy) is the leading accountancy body for the public services providing education and training in accountancy and finance. It champions high performance in public services with clear advice and practical services.

COSLA (Convention of Scottish Local Authorities) is the representative voice of Scottish local government and acts as the employers association on behalf of all Scottish Councils.

Creative Scotland is the new national leader for Scottish arts, screen and creative industries. It invests in people and ideas and develops creative industries and champions everything that is good about Scottish creativity.

Firstport is an organisation that supports new and emerging social entrepreneurs across Scotland, providing advice and resources.

Improvement Service supports local government and its partners to deliver better outcomes for communities – improving efficiency, quality and accountability by providing advice, consultancy and programme support.

MLA (Museums, Libraries and Archives Council) has a remit to promote improvement and innovation in the area of museums, libraries and archives. MLA also works in partnership with ALMA-UK.

OSCR (Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator) gives information and advice on a range of functions of registered charities. Its website details the duties which apply to charity trustees in Scotland.

Scottish Government publishes policies and frameworks for public services in Scotland.

Scottish Social Enterprise Coalition is the national collective voice for social enterprise in Scotland. It provide a wide range of information and resources to support social enterprise organisations.

SCVO (Scottish Council for Voluntary Organisations) is the national body representing the voluntary sector. Their website provides information on alternative models of delivery and other guidance.

SLIC (Scottish Library and Information Council) operates to support individuals and organisations working within library and information services in Scotland. It undertakes research and promotes innovation, provides information, eduation and advice.

Social Enterprise Coalition promotes business set up to tackle a social or environmental need and provides information on policies, campaigns and events.

VOCAL (Voice of Chief Officers for Cultural and Leisure Services in Scotland) is the professional body for culture and sport in local government in Scotland.
